Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife plans on closing Mossyrock Trout Hatchery

Friends of the Cowlitz members as well as the general public see no advantage to the Mayfield lake Trout program or to the general public to have the rearing of Rainbow trout contracted out to Nisqually Fish, based out of Lacey, WA. That's right folks....Tacoma Public Utility plans on stopping Friends of the Cowlitz from Volunteering from rearing Rainbow Trout in Mayfield lake in FOC net pens.

FOC saves the Dept untold dollars while they receive a quality product that is released into the exact same waters it was reared in making a healthier fish.

Nisqually Trout Farm is in Lacey, the fish would be reared in open ponds with no netting to keep out birds of prey, they would have to be trucked to Mayfield lake as well as other release sites, and yet at this time, NTF, doesn't even own a truck equipped with adequate facilities for the fish, so I guess in reality, anglers would just be expected to net them out of the water, because they would certainly all be dead when they arrived at Mayfield. Without proper equipment, fish should not be hauled that distance.

For the last 15 years, FOC, in conjunction with the staff of Mossyrock Trout Hatchery, have reared a quality fish (in Mayfield Lake) that is released into Mayfield lake.
Both the Dept as well as FOC have received may compliments on the amount and the quality of trout in the lake.

You need to tell them that Tacoma Public Utility should not have contracted with Nisqually Fish Farm to rear Mayfield lake fish. These are mitigated fish 25,000 lbs, and they should remain being reared and released into Mayfield. We want a healthy trout in Mayfield, we do not want to take the chance to have harmful pathogens brought into Mayfield.
Mossyrock Trout Hatchery also reared 25,000 lbs of mitigated fish for other parts of the basin, which were also contracted to Nisqually Trout Farm.

Let them know that the quality of trout has to have a value, it isn't just about who can do it the cheapest

This is not a single event....other hatcheries on the hit list are:

SKAMANIA Hatchery
TOUTLE Hatchery
ELOCHOMAN Hatchery

The three Hatcheries above all raise Summer-Run Steelhead!

The fisheries on these river systems needs you to become involved. Feel free to give Don a call 360-985-2495 if you have any questions.
